Bollywood’s silence over the Padmavati controversy during the last few months has been telling. Most of the film industry’s actors and filmmakers have chosen to not comment about the protests and ridiculous demand to ban the film. Even a call to cut Deepika Padukone’s nose and behead Sanjay Leela Bhansali was met with a stony silence - with only a few members of the industry like, Hansal Mehta, Anurag Kashyap, Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar choosing to speak out.
However, the latest statement by the Haryana BJP’s chief media coordinator, Suraj Pal Amu - offering Rs 10 crore to the person who beheads Deepika Padukone and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has finally evoked a reaction from a few actors.
Varun Dhawan tweeted that he was shocked at the statement and went on to ask what the reaction to this offer would have been if it were for a sportsperson or businessman.
Sonam Kapoor posted a message saying that she was appalled and ashamed of all the drama that’s unfolding around Padmavati.
Twinkle Khanna tried to find a lighter side to Suraj Pal Amu’s threat via this tweet:
In another tweet, Twinkle also wished that Padmavati emerge as the biggest hit ever to silence its protestors.
Arjun Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh also called out the BJP member’s offer to reward the beheading of Deepika and Bhansali.
Actor Shabana Azmi had earlier called for Bollywood to unite over the Padmavati controversy and the threats to its cast and crew. However, with the industry’s most powerful players choosing to remain silent, it seems this episode will just go on to be a shot in the arm for those who time and again choose to make the film industry a soft target.
