The trailer for Kartik Aaryan-starrer Pati, Patni Aur Woh was released on 4 November and is already getting flak on social media for its sexist undertones. It begins with Chintu Tyagi (Kartik Aaryan) lamenting to his friend Aparshakti Khurrana that his father had tricked him into getting married at a young age. He claims to love his wife (Bhumi Pednekar), but when Tapasya (Ananya Panday) steps into his life, his loyalties shift in an instant.

Social media users have been calling out one sequence in particular where Kartik tells his friend that if a man requests for sex from his wife he is labelled a bhikari (beggar), if he does not have sex with her, he is an atyachari (cruel man) and if somehow he manages to convince her through “jugaad”, he is branded a balatkari (rapist).

Twitter users have criticised the makers of the film for making light of marital rape, especially considering it still isn’t considered a criminal offence in India. Here is what they have to say about the trailer:

Some also pointed out that Ananya Panday looks uncomfortably underage when compared to Kartik. Others felt that the remake was a mockery of the original film.

Pati, Patni Aur Woh is a remake of BR Chopra’s 1978 film of the same name. It has been directed by Mudassar Aziz and produced by Juno Chopra and Abhay Chopra. It also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Ananya Panday. The original film is a humorous take on extra marital affairs and is about a man who lies to his secretary that his wife is terminally ill to gain her sympathy and get closer to her. His plans are foiled when his wife finds out about his deceit. The remake will be revisit the story with a modern twist. Pati, Patni Aur Woh releases on 6 December.
