The idea of a film on writer and poet Amrita Pritam has been in the works for a long time now. While different filmmakers have showed an interest in making a film about Amrita Pritam and her relationship with lyricist and poet Sahir Ludhianvi, it’s Sanjay Leela Bhansali who as reportedly made it to the finishing line and will be producing a film on the life and times of the renowned Punjabi poet.
According to a report in the Mumbai Mirror, Bhansali’s team has zeroed in on Taapsee Pannu to play the role of Amrita Pritam and Abhishek Bachchan to step into Sahir Ludhianvi’s shoes. The film will be directed by writer-director Jasmeet Reen, whose filmography as a writer includes titles like Force 2 and Fanney Khan.
The film on Amrita Pritam and Sahir Ludhianvi is expected to go on floors from October this year. While neither Taapsee nor Abhishek have signed the film yet, a source close to the project has told Mirror that both the actors have loved the script and have given their nod for it.
Jasmeet Reen’s IMDB page includes a project titled Gustakhiyan - we wonder if that is the title of the Amrita Pritam film with Taapsee and Abhishek. Names like Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone were earlier associated with the project but due to various reasons the casting of the Amrita Pritam film never worked out.
This will be Taapsee and Abhishek’s second film together after Anurag Kashyap’s Manmarziyaan. Their chemistry and pairing in Manmarziyaan got a lot of critical acclaim but the film didn’t exactly do well at the box office.
