Sui Dhaaga - Made In India

‘Sui Dhaaga’ is Predictable but Charming in Its Simplicity

Mamta and Mauji gave a new lease of life to the world of memes. Thankfully for us, they come across as fully fleshed out characters in Sharat Kataria’s latest directorial venture Sui Dhaaga.

At first glance there is nothing extraordinary about these two. The well meaning and trusting Mauji, played by Varun Dhawan, seems at ease with the little that life offers him. “Sab badhiya hai,” he keeps repeating! And Mamta, played by Anushka Sharma, is the sar-par-pallu and reverential to a fault bahu who goes about her daily chores.

However, slowly and surely, little resentments lead to a full-fledged revolt. Mauji’s foul-tempered boss gets on his nerves and Mamta implores him to make something of himself. “Aap apna kuch kerlo, itna hunar toh hai aap mein.”

Finally, the sui mein dhaga moment that we were waiting for arrives but so do the knotty troubles .

Played by Raghubir Yadav, Mauji’s bauji – who is on the verge of retirement – is exasperated with the ways of his son. Adding to Mamta and Mauji’s woes are the naysayers within the family and outside.

Mamta and Mauji forge ahead, one hurdle at a time and the film owes a lot of its charm to Varun and Anushka’s evocative portrayal. The story of an underdog winning the race, if told well, is sure to be a winner.

Sui Dhaaga chooses a predictable pattern to follow but weaves together a tapestry of heart-warming emotions.

Anushka and Varun work the silent moments well and perfectly capture the well-meaning vibe of Mauji and the quiet dignity of Mamta. That’s when the film truly comes alive.

Also the supporting cast lead from the front. Raghubir Yadav, especially, never misses a beat.

Although there are no great surprises in store as the narrative progresses, the simple and honest storytelling will surely win you over! It delivers what it promised and made us cheer for Team Sui Dhaaga.
