What makes Bollywood different from Hollywood is the fact that Bollywood movies focus a lot on the music of the film. So we decided to track down a composer who makes background scores and songs for these Bollywood films.
We met Shashwat Sachdev, the musical genius behind movies like Uri: The Surgical Strike, Phillauri and Veere Di Wedding, and got him to talk about what drives him to make music and his personal process of making music for movies.
When asked about how he makes background scores for films, this is what he had to say:
Background music (BGM) is a completely different space. The idea is that you have to consistently keep making music when you’re working on a project actually.Shashwat Sachdev
When asked about how he made the score for Uri, this is what he said:
So with Uri, it’s a very well written script. What it needs is there in the writing. So I thought that maybe we could do like a war sound which is like very electronic. So then I went to Berlin, I got a few synthesizers. I got a modular synthesizer. I was there for a long time so I kept figuring the kind of sound I wanted exactly for the film. And then we made the score and then we played the orchestral parts to give it that emotional feeling. So that it also doesn’t sound... It just doesn’t sound like sound design at all. It also has music, it has harmony, it has melody. And then we went to Vienna to record. We got together a certain set of musicians that was perfect for the sound of Uri. And then we came back.Shashwat Sachdev
As someone who feels so passionately about composing music, Shashwat is happy that he gets to be a part of Bollywood films, which involve a lot of music.
