Kabir Singh made over Rs 272 crore in 5 weeks and can easily be called the biggest hit of 2019 so far. Despite its commendable box office collection, the movie received criticism from critics and audience alike, for its portrayal of toxic masculinity.

At the India Today Conclave held on Saturday, Shahid Kapoor defended the film and talked about its huge success at the box office. “Kabir Singh is among the top 10 grossers of all times in the history of Indian cinema. We knew the film had potential and we feel that we did make a good film.”

“We were aware that the film was different knew that it could make certain people uncomfortable but when the movie was released, it was otherwise. As a fraternity we are certain times way behind the audience. We create some pre-existing notions in our heads, which limits our creativity.”

Defending his character in the film, the actor said, “Kiara’s character in the film is stronger than mine, The film was about a flawed character. When SRK killed Shilpa Shetty in Baazigar, no one talked about that. No one brought up putting a commode seat on Sonam Kapoor’s neck in Sanju. Why is everyone after Kabir Singh?”

The actor continued on to say that it’s one choice whether to treat cinema as an educational institution or not. “The film was an adult film, for adults who can differentiate between right and wrong. Are you telling me that Mr Bachchan is someone who taught people to be a thief? You know you’re going to watch a movie right, it’s fiction right?” Shahid added.

“When you see a couple fighting, you’ll make a different idea of it. But fundamentally, they’re in love. That’s how life is, it’s unpredictable. Why is there a problem? It’s a democracy, and you are free to choose to take away what you want from the film.”
