The first teaser of Kangana Ranaut’s next big release, Simran, is out. The 1-minute teaser shows a series of montages of Kangana in a happy space with an upbeat musical piece playing out in the background. If you were expecting a teaser that would show you the life and exploits of the ‘Bombshell Bandit’ who was convicted for bank robberies in the US, you will be surprised.
As writer and editor Apurva Asrani had said earlier, after working on two ‘heavy’ films like Shahid and Aligarh, he along with director Hansal Mehta had decided to keep the mood and treatment of Simran ‘light’ and ‘fun’.
While the teaser of Simran looks promising, on the downside of recent developments around the project has been the fall out between two close collaborators - filmmaker Hansal Mehta and writer / editor Apurva Asrani.
Apurva was understandably upset when Kangana Ranaut was given a co-writer’s credit on the film without consulting him. While Apruva has been credited with ‘story, screenplay and dialogue’ for Simran, Kangana Ranaut has been credited with ‘additional story and dialogue’ on the film’s poster. Not only was Apruva not taken into confidence before having to share the credit with Kangana, the actress was also given the ‘additional’ credit over Apurva’s on the poster, which comes as a surprise and is being called out on social media.
Writer Saiwyn Quadras posted this on his Facebook page earlier today:
Apurva too has has been expressing his sense of betrayal to the team of Simran and especially director Hansal Mehta via Twitter .
While the writer is totally ok about Kangana being given the ‘additional dialogue’ credit, since the actress did improvise many of the dialogues during the shoot, it’s the ‘additional story’ credit that has rankled Apurva.
I had met Apurva in 2015, while he was all excited, just starting out to write Simran. Having spent over a year thrashing out a story as a writer, it does feel exasperating to have someone claim an additional credit at the last moment, and get a higher billing on the poster to add to it.
While we’ll be waiting to hear Kangana’s side of the story on this, the bummer is that we won’t be seeing Apurva and Hansal join hands on a film any time soon.
