Perhaps one of the most controversial films of the year, PM Narendra Modi, the official biopic of India’s current prime minister, has finally gotten a release date. The film will be releasing on 24 May, a day after the results of ongoing Lok Sabha elections are expected to be declared. The film features Bollywood actor Vivek Oberoi playing the role of Narendra Modi.

Just before the worldwide release of the film on 11 April, the Election Commission had issued a ban on the film until after the Lok Sabha elections. According to the EC, the film’s release would threaten the level playing field of elections. On 26 April, the Supreme Court had refused to interfere with the Election Commission’s decision to ban the film until 19 May.

Here’s what the makers of the film have to say:

“As a responsible citizen we respect the law of the country. After a lot of discussions and keeping the curiosity and excitement about the film in mind we have decided to release the film immediately after the Lok Sabha Election results. We are now releasing our film on 24th May 2019. This is the first time a film will be promoted for only four days. I hope now nobody has any problem with the film and we are hoping for the smooth release this time.”
