Speaking about his upcoming film Mere Pyaare Prime Minister, which is slated to release on 15 March, Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra claimed that he would not be holding a special screening for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Mehra, who’s films Rang De Basanti and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag have been famously lauded across the industry, however told PTI that if the Prime Minister was to watch the film on his own volition, then it would be a matter of great “honour” for the Director.
Mere Pyaare Prime Minister narrates the story of a young slum child who travels to Delhi with his friends to meet the Prime Minister, after his mother is raped. The film features stars like Anjali Patil, Om Kanujiya and Atul Kulkarni among others.
On being asked about why he would not hold a special screening for Prime Minister Modi, Mehra told PTI:
“I feel the film is made for the people of the country and somewhere I don’t want to dilute that by using such a big office. He is a very busy man and is running the country...To take three hours of his time which he could devote to some national and international interest.”
Considering that the film will be released in the country just before the Lok Sabha elections, Mehra was also asked whether he believed his film would affect the polls.
To this, PTI reported, he replied saying: “It'll not have an effect on the elections and it should not. A film's job should not be to impact elections. My endeavour is to make movies which can be perpetual.”
