In episode 4 of the entertainment podcast, Reel Deal, we do a postmortem of the Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Rakul Preet Singh-starrer, De De Pyaar De, which released in theatres today.
The film revolves around the relationship between a 50-year-old man (Ajay) and a 26-year-old girl (Raku), and the complications that come with a huge age-gap.
The fact that the film is written and produced by Luv Ranjan (and directed by his editor Akiv Ali), made many of us expect a repeat of his female-bashing comedies like the Pyaar Ka Punchnama franchise and Sonu Ki Teetu Ki Sweety. But perhaps we judged it too soon!
In this podcast, we discuss Ajay embracing his age (which very few of the ageing male stars of Bollywood have done so far), the female characters and how it tackles the age-gap, among other things.

The love story in this one is handled, and surprisingly so, with a lot more maturity and depth than his earlier films.
The scene in the trailer where Rakul Preet and Tabu taunt each other’s age, with Ajay Devgn stuck in the middle, by using the ‘car’ metaphor, hinted at an immature sexist take on a romantic comedy. But the trailer surely did disservice to the actual plot of the film, which revolves around the complexities that come with dating someone way older or way younger than you.
The film is not without flaws for sure! The Bhangra at the farmer’s market, unnecessarily loud background score and some forced comedy involving a big fat Indian family, to name a few. But it is also refreshingly mature in handling of the age-gap premise and complexities of relationships.
But does that mean De De Pyaar De is worth a watch? Tune in to the above podcast to find out!
