Bollywood has had the best September at the box office in years. While Mission Mangal, which released on 15 August, crossed Rs 200 crore in September, Prabhas’ Saaho (Hindi version), which released on 30 August, grossed Rs 116 crore in its opening week (the first week of September).
Chhichhore has made Rs 144.40 crore (until Sunday 29 September) and Ayushmann Khurrana-starrer Dream Girl stood at Rs 127.00 crore at the end of the month.
September thus gave us four consecutive Rs 100-crore hits in the form of Mission Mangal, Saaho (Hindi version), Chhichhore (6 August) and Dream Girl (13 August). There was no release on 22 August. These four films have made Bollywood approximately Rs 620 crore at the box office so far.
In 2019, Bollywood films released in September made around Rs 452 crore with just seven releases. If you factor in August release Mission Mangal’s September collections of around Rs 24.75 crore, the total would go up to Rs 476.75 crore approximately.
In comparison, 2018, despite nine mainstream releases managed to make only around Rs 182 crore.
2017 was slightly better, but still less than half of this year’s numbers.
