Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has been a bit underground after Bombay Velvet tanked at the box office. But with 2017 just around the corner the filmmaker shared on Facebook, a list of films that impressed him in the year gone by. We imagine he’s regretting his Bombay Velvet decision a bit. Though he sounds happy about the fact that the film industry churned out some real gems, maybe he secretly wishes that he had helmed some of these. Anurag is also super impressed with Manoj Bajpayee and gives him the ‘Best Actor’ award at the end of his Facebook post.
Never seen so many lists of best films, actors (male and female) or whatever, ever before. It’s so good. I suddenly feel there’s so much I haven’t seen. But why only Hindi films, why not films from other languages? We do make films in many languages. I mentioned Visaranai and Thithi in last year’s list. But this year it’s difficult to choose. So here are my guilty pleasures and the best I saw this year, in no particular order.Anurag Kashyap, Filmmaker
Chauthi Koot
Gurgaon
Anurag Kashyap describes this one as the best noir he’s seen made in recent times, and strongly suggests that we look out for this one in 2017. Well, since only Anurag Kashyap has seen this one yet, we take his word for it.
Kammatipaadam
Kapoor & Sons
Sairat
Gold Laden Sheep and the Sacred Mountain
This Ridham Janve film makes it to Mr Kashyap’s list probably on the basis of intimate discussions with its makers and rushes that he might have seen, since the film hasn’t released yet.
Aligarh
Parched
Udta Punjab
Dangal (minus the national anthem)
Budhia Singh (suffered because it did not have an Aamir Khan, but equally good)
Placebo
These are the films I had a complete experience with... that is along with the disclaimer that I haven’t seen Waiting, Phobia, Island City, Bollywood Diaries, Jugni, and so much more. In fact, this is the year I saw the least number of films. My actor of the year is Manoj Bajpayee, hands down.Anurag Kashyap
