Congress candidate from South Mumbai, Milind Deora, appears to be trailing behind Shiv Sena candidate Arvind Sawant by over 1 lakh votes. While Sawant has managed to secure a lead with 4,19,971 votes, Deora secured 3,19,201 votes as of 6 pm on 23 May.

This isn’t the first time the two candidates are facing off against each other. Milind Deora won the South Mumbai seat, considered to be a Congress stronghold, in 2004 and 2009. In 2014 however, Deora lost the constituency to Arvind Sawant by a margin of 1,44,154 votes.

Ahead of polling for the Lok Sabha elections, Reliance Industries chairman, Mukesh Ambani, had publicly endorsed Milind Deora. In a video shared by Deora, Ambani can be heard saying, “Milind is the man for South Mumbai.”

Mukesh Ambani then went on to add,

“Having represented South Bombay for 10 years, I believe Milind has in-depth knowledge of the social, economic and cultural ecosystem of the South Bombay constituency.”
