Confirming unemployment rate projected in a pre-election leaked NSSO report, the government on Friday, 31 May, said joblessness in the country was 6.1 percent of total labour force during 2017-18, the highest in 45 years.
The data released by the government, on a day when Modi 2.0 Cabinet took charge, showed 7.8 percent of all employable urban youth were jobless, while the percentage for the rural youth was 5.3 percent.
The joblessness among men on all-India basis was 6.2 percent, while it was 5.7 percent in case of women.
Twitter was quick to slam the government over the dismal state of affairs, with many claiming that the ‘hiding’ of the data during the elections was ‘convenient’.
‘Fake News... Not!’
Journalist Somesh Jha, who broke the story of the buried NSSO report, dismissed Irani’s claim of the unemployment data being fake news.
‘Big Challenge Awaits Modi’
While others said that the dismal GDP growth rate, combined with the unemployment levels, had presented the new Modi government with a big challenge.
