Congress President Rahul Gandhi’s resignation has been in the news for a few days now. While the Congress scion offered to resign from the post, the party is just not ready to let him go. The CWC rejected his resignation, saying the party needs his leadership and guidance. But Rahul seems to be adamant about quitting.
While the question of ‘If not Rahul, then who’ looms above Congress and many others, there are also suggestions to rid the party of dynasty politics.
RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav said “Rahul’s offer to resign (is) suicidal.”
“Opposition parties had the common goal to dislodge BJP but failed to build a national narrative. The result in a particular election can never alter the reality in as diverse and plural a country as India,” he told The Telegraph.
Actor-turned-politician Rajnikanth was also of the view that Rahul Gandhi resigning is not a good idea.
‘Full Blown Crisis’
Twitter users also gave their opinions on this conundrum. One Twitter user said “Congress folks should stop crying over it [the resignation] and accept it.”
“Insisting that there's no one other than Rahul Gandhi to be the Party president only shows how weak the party indeed is,” he wrote.
Journalist Sagarika Ghose said it is a “make or break moment for Rahul Gandhi.”
“From resignation comes renewal and possibly the road ahead for Congress,” she tweeted.
Congress party is in a “full blown crisis,” tweeted journalist Swati Chaturvedi.
‘Fight Back’
One Congress supporter said BJP has put in money, time, effort and planning to demolish Rahul Gandhi. “Our workers have fought this battle for many years. We win only if we continue to fight back. We fail if he decides to quit,” he tweeted.
Another Twitter user said Rahul Gandhi should get on a nationwide peace padyaatra instead of quitting what is bound to be a long struggle. “He can begin his yatra by visiting families of the victims of cow-lynching and other hate crimes. Resistance to fascism is on the ground, not in election rallies,” he tweeted.
‘Rahul’s Resignation Not Solution’
There were also opinions that the solution is not Rahul’s resignation. “It is the removal of some dead weight party members on senior ranks & a complete reshuffle and re assignment of fresh position holders & direct advisors in the committee.”
Solidarity
There were also displays of unconditional solidarity. One Twitter user said he is proud he stood for a vision of inclusion. “Whatever your decision is, I will be proud that I supported you [Rahul Gandhi],” the Twitter user said.
