AAP East Delhi candidate Atishi Marlena on Thursday, 9 May, accused her BJP counterpart Gautam Gambhir of circulating derogatory pamphlets about her. But Gambhir denied the allegations and in turn sent a defamation notice to AAP leaders including Arvind Kejriwal demanding that the noticees apologise and withdraw their statements or face legal action.

Amidst all this, Anil Bajpayi, an AAP leader who joined BJP claimed that he had himself seen Atishi’s husband eat beef. He also went on to question why Atishi’s husband was not seen during the elections, asking, “Where is her husband?

Twitter took sides too with #IStandWithAtishi and #IStandWithGambhir.

‘Character Assassination’

Many women journalists and writers took to Twitter with the #IStandWithAtishi and said the incidents point towards the misogynistic attitude of the society. While journalist Swati Chaturvedi said this is ‘character assassination’, writer Mahima Kukreja said ‘courageous, intelligent women scare a lot of patriarchal men’.
