Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday, 8 May, accused the Congress of disregarding the sentiments of Sikhs by awarding the post of Madhya Pradesh CM to Kamal Nath, an accused in the 1984 riots.

In an election rally in Haryana’s Fatehabad, PM Modi said, “Your chowkidar had promised the Sikh community that 1984 riots culprits will be punished. I am satisfied that the process of them being sentenced to death or life imprisonment has started.”

“But this shameless Congress is awarding those who were a part of the crime. By making a person who is said to be involved in 1984 anti-Sikh riots the Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Congress has proved that it doesn’t care about your sentiments.”

Modi added that after five phases of elections, the Congress-led opposition has given up the fight and the “situation is clear” now that the BJP will form government at the Centre.

He said that with the blessings of the people, the BJP-led NDA formed the government in 2014 and in the past five years, India’s stature has increased in the world.

"Now, the situation is quite clear, with the blessings of countrymen, when results will be out by 23 May evening, it will once again be ‘Phir ek Bar (Modi government again)’," the prime minister said in a rally in Haryana's Fatehabad.

"The Congress and their ‘mahamilavati’ allies have given up the fight, and their intention to form a 'kichdi aur majboor sarkar' in Delhi has fallen flat,” Modi said.

He alleged that the Congress has done "brashtachar ki kheti” and the proof is in Haryana and elsewhere.

Ten Lok Sabha seats of Haryana go to polls in the sixth phase on 12 May.
