Hema Malini, BJP MP and Lok Sabha candidate from Mathura constituency, Uttar Pradesh began her campaign for the polls on Sunday, 31 March, by working on a farm in Mathura. Malini, who has announced that this is the last election she is fighting, filed her nomination papers after a puja led by Yogi Adityanath in Mathura on 25 March. The constituency is due to vote on 18 April.
The former actor tweeted photos of herself on Sunday carrying bundles of freshly harvested crop and said that she was lending a hand to women working in a wheat field in Govardhan area.
Twitter was quick to react to the photos of the MP, sickle in hand and working on a farm. While some praised the actor for showing her dedication to the cause and her constituency, some others were not so taken in by the photos.
Those who were not so impressed by the photos came out either criticising the politician or making fun of her photo-op.
“Doing five years worth of hard work in one day. Smart work”, one Twitter user noted.
Mumbai NCP spokesperson Clyde Crasto said that the MP was following in the footsteps of her leader.
One Twitter user called out both the Gandhis and Malini, saying that both needed to be defeated.
Some humorously praised her acting skills in the context of the photos.
