The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party on Friday sought calling off the Sulur bypoll scheduled on 19 May after authorities denied permission for party chief Kamal Hassan to campaign there.
The party said permission was denied citing law and order issues and that many petitions had been sent, requesting denial of permission for the campaign, MNM General Secretary A Arunachalam said in a petition to the Election Commission of India.
Earlier, the Coimbatore police had denied permission to Haasan following a furore over his 'free India's first extremist was a Hindu' remarks, due to which Haasan could not undertake campaigning on Friday.

Sunny Deol Approaches HC 'Fearing Misuse of Official Machinery' by Congress in Polls
Actor and BJP candidate from Gurdaspur Sunny Deol on Friday, 17 May, moved the Punjab and Haryana high court in Chandigarh "fearing misuse of official machinery" by the ruling Congress and sought adequate measures, including deployment of additional paramilitary forces, to ensure free and fair polling.
Deol also demanded that the Gurdaspur constituency be declared "super sensitive", claiming it was prone to violence. He cited the incidents of poll-related violence in the border constituency during panchayat polls which were conducted across the state in December 2018. "We moved the court because we feared the official machinery could be misused in the elections by the Congress," advocate Pankaj Jain, the counsel for Deol, told reporters.
