While the ban on the release of the biopic on PM Modi hogged all the headlines, the Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday, 10 April, also effected similar restrictions on two more biopics – on NT Rama Rao and K Chandrashekar Rao.
The EC issued letters to the producers of the biopics, Laxmi's NTR and Udyama Simham, letting them know about the decision.
“Any biopic material in the nature of biography/hagiography sub-serving the purposes of any political entity or any individual entity connected to it, which is intended to, or which has the potential to disturb the level playing field, should not be displayed in electronic media, including cinematograph.” the poll panel said in the letters.
In the letter to the producer of Laxmi’s NTR, the EC said: “Laxmi’s NTR is publicised as the biopic of Late Shri NT Rama Rao, which purported to depict Shri N Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh, and a leader of a recognised political party in a manner allegedly diminishing the electoral prospect of his party”.
On similar lines, in the letter to the producer of Udyama Simham, the poll panel said: “Udyama Simham is publicised as biopic of Shri K Chandrashekar Rao, Chief Minister, Telangana, and leader of a recognised political party”.
