“Should I Pick BTech or BSc?”: We Answer Your Admission Queries

I have passed my 12th board exams with 84%, PCM. I gave the IP exam and got a rank of 13,000. I am confused between B Tech and B Sc. What should I do?

Dear student,

If you get good BTech colleges based on this score, then undoubtedly take admission in engineering. However, this is subject to your interest. If you want to get into technical jobs in the future and have the correct skill set, then this is the best option. Studying engineering will give you a chance at better job prospects. If you decide to study B Sc, that’s good too. Depending on the specialisation that you opt for, you can choose to either stick to the field or shift to other domains. But if given a choice between B Tech & B Sc, we suggest that you opt for B Tech.

My best of four score in class 12 boards is 96 percent. I want to do MBA later. I am confused if I should do BBA LLB from IP university or Bcom from DU. Which one would have more value?

Dear Ankita,

In my opinion, if you are to pursue MBA after completing your UG studies, you should take up BCom from DU. Firstly, if you compare the two Universities – IP and DU – the latter is more prestigious. Secondly, on completing BCom from DU, you will be in a better position to apply for jobs that will add to your work experience which will be an added advantage at the time of MBA interviews.

I have scored 72 percent in class 12 PCMB. I want to pursue BSc in Biotechnology (preferably hons) outside Mumbai. Can you suggest good government colleges that will accept me at this percentage?

Since you have studied Economics till class 12, Economics (Hons) will be a good option for you. Universities like DU, Mumbai University offer the course. Apart from that other commerce courses that you can pursue are BBA, BCom, BMS etc.

We suggest that you start applying in private engineering colleges based on your location preference, at the same time, appear for the counselling process of the exams you appeared for.

I have completed my 12th (PCM ) this year and have got 88 percent. I am a geek and have a dream to become a computer scientist or to get into a position where my job would be to design and build new gadgets. I am getting some good colleges which are among India’s top 100 colleges but I am confused whether I should take admission or to try for IITs next year. I am also confused about the BTech field I should choose (electronics or computer science and engineering).

Dear Utkarsh,

Computer Science and Gadget Designing are two different fields. If you want to become a computer scientist, you should pursue BTech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) followed by M Tech in Automation Engineering. On the other hand, if you are interested in gadget designing, Electronics and Communication Engineering followed by MTech in VLSI would be the right career path for you.

Taking your word for it, if you are good at computers and are really interested in the field then you must go for BTech CSE. However, the final decision should be yours since this is your career.

Similarly, dropping a year for preparation should be your decision. Prioritise your options before deciding. If you don’t want to give away a year, then you must enrol for the best college you are getting, However, if you think you can score well next year, go ahead with full dedication.

My PCM aggregate in class 12 is 56 percent but my overall percentage is 62.40 percent. My JEE mains ranking is 1,95,057. My father is in CRPF. Can I get into NSIT by defence quota as last year’s cut-off went to 4,00,000? Can I apply for priority 7 of defence quota? If not, can you suggest me some good colleges in Delhi NCR and Chandigarh and nearby area with these marks?

Dear student,

Yes, there is a defence quota in Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology (NSIT) for wards of defence and paramilitary personnel. Over and above the normal intake, 5% of the total seats are reserved for Defence Category candidates. As per priority 7, wards of serving personnel can get admission. However, any candidate's admission in an institute depends on various factors like cut-offs, whether you have all the necessary documents or not, etc. Take a look at last year's NSIT cut-off where you can find cut-offs under Defence (CW) category.
