I want to apply for BSc Computer Science. But I missed one exam in HSC because I fell ill. So I would have a supplementary. My re-exam will take place in July and my result will be declared in August. I scored 90.08% in my SSC Boards. I want to know if I am eligible for BSc Computer Science. What colleges should I apply to? The only reason I’m in this situation is because of my poor health. Please do help me out.
Disha Bhanushali, The Quint’s reader

Dear Disha,

Some colleges grant provisional admissions subject to the production of relevant documents by a stipulated time and date that is decided in advance. In case the candidates are able to meet the requirements, they are given admissions.

We suggest that if you are aiming at a central or a government university you can check the eligibility criteria on the official website. Otherwise, if you want to get admission in a private university/college, you can visit the admissions office of that university.

I want to know the scope of BSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics?
Anonymous

Hey,

Everybody in today’s world is health conscious and understands the importance of staying fit. The scope after pursuing a course in Nutrition and Dietetics is huge. A dietician helps develop individual diet plans and monitor it from time to time. This is not just restricted to a particular age group and is applicable to all – from children to new mothers to the retired lot. One can find jobs in government as well as private hospitals and nursing homes as nutrition counsellors, health coaches and guides. Apart from that, one can also get into research oriented programmes, food science and other community development projects centred around nutrition.

So if you are planning to pursue a course in this field, ensure that you have a keen interest in subjects like Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Additional skills such as interest in writing reports, interest in food preparation, good research skills, patience and concern for individuals are an added advantage.

I graduated from Annamalai University (BA Sociology) in distant education. Now I work as a journalist. I need to know the following things: Can I enrol for any regular Master’s degree? Can I enrol in any university outside India? Is there any scope of studying abroad with any scholarship? Are there any universities that gives a chance to working journalists who can study and work at the same time? Which are the good courses that I can take to enhance my English, mainly through an online or distant/postal medium?
Vaisakh Aryan, The Quint’s reader

Dear Vaisakh,
1. In India, most universities require a Bachelor’s degree in regular mode to grant admission to a regular Master’s degree. However, there may be some private institutes who will be willing to give admission to students who have done their UG in distance learning mode.
2. To apply abroad for a Master’s degree programme, you need a minimum 12 + 3 + 1 years of education. Again, if you can supplement reasons for pursuing UG in a distance learning mode (volunteering/ Armed Services/ job etc.), they may consider your application for a regular Master’s degree. This varies from country to country and from course to course.
3. The parent university (where you will be studying) may have provision for scholarships & fellowships. In addition, various Indian organisations and/ or the Govt. of India may give them as well.

Some of the popular fellowships & scholarships given out in India include:
· Dr Manmohan Singh Scholarships
· Oxford and Cambridge Society of India Scholarship
· USIEF Fulbright-Nehru Fellowships
· Chinese Government Scholarship
· International PG Research Scholarship by Australia

My sister just completed her class 12 with 88% in commerce and I am thinking of getting her admitted to DU. But I don’t know what options she has after commerce. Can you tell me the career prospects after completing her schooling and what all is required?
Priyanshu Kumar, The Quint’s reader

Dear Priyanshu,
As far as your query is concerned, the scope in the field of Commerce today is wide. Candidates who pursue a career in this field can take up jobs in the government as well as private sectors. Options will include banking, finance, investment, management firms etc.

Popular choices for courses to pursue after 12th commerce include B.Com (Hons), BA (Economics), BBA, Bachelor of Management Studies etc. Alternatively, if she has interest in Accountancy – opting for CA or Chartered Accountancy is good choice too. Along with that, one can definitely pursue an evening/ correspondence course in B.Com from Universities such as DU.

Next, no doubt, another most popular choice of course is B.Com (Hons) from some of the best colleges in India. But with cut-offs soaring up to as high as 100%, making it to B.Com colleges in DU can be stressful. But wait, some DU colleges do provide relaxation of marks for female candidates. Keep in mind that the last day to apply for merit based admissions is 12 June 2017. For courses such as BMS and BBA at DU she will have to appear for the entrance exams that are conducted by the University. Applications for the same are scheduled to begin from 12 June 2017.

It is always a good idea to keep your choices open and apply to other colleges and universities as well.
