Deadpool 2 released to largely favourable reviews on 17 May. Deadpool 2 sees an assortment of fun characters joining the ‘merc with a mouth’ for the second, bigger-budget sequel to 2016's blockbuster superhero flick, Deadpool.

But, while Ryan Reynolds as the titular Deadpool is more than enough to keep us coming back for more, these are the other mutants who we saw, and who you WILL see joining the wise-cracking, mass-murdering mercenary in DP2.

PS: In case you didn't know, Deadpool is a mercenary with healing abilities, strong enough to pretty much recover from any fatal injury, and the sense of humour of a 14-year-old. Basically an immortal, highly efficient assassin/comedian.

Domino

‘Is it better to be smart or lucky?’

Domino (Zazie Beets) takes the phrase "getting lucky" to a whole new level. Her superpower, quite literally, is that she's lucky.

The result of a top-secret Government programme to create the ultimate weapon, like half the Marvel universe, Domino can alter probability to have things go in her favour, in any situation.

Deadpool: Luck isn’t a superpower. And it isn’t cinematic!

Domino: Yes, it is.

Deadpool: I’m gonna meet you in the middle and say no.

We're gonna disagree with Wade here, because damn are Domino's powers cinematic! Things go just right for the mutant, who apart from her unbelievable luck, is also an expert marksman and possesses heightened skill at hand-to-hand combat.

Think Black Widow, but really lucky!

She's a member of the mutant X-Force team who join Wade in the second coming of Deadpool.

Cable

There's a reason we started the list with Domino. Because Cable's origin story will make your head spin. I'll save you the nuts and bolts, and put it as succinctly as possible.

Cable is a time-travelling mutant with a number of cybernetic modifications (notice the metal arm?), combat training, and mutant abilities.

Cable: You're no hero. You're just a clown, dressed up like a sex toy.

Deadpool: So dark. You sure you're not from the DC universe?

Cable was born Nathan Summers, the son of Scott Summers (Cyclops from the X-Men) and an evil clone of Jean Grey (also X-Men).

Cable and Deadpool have gone together since their first comic book outing in 2008, like ice cream and chocolate sauce (but healthier).

Cable has had telepathic and telekinetic powers in the past, which he gets from his mother, and it looks like DP2 will focus primarily on the Cable-Deadpool relationship.

Bedlam

We got Terry Crews in the house! Crews plays Bedlam, a mutant whose body creates an electromagnetic pulse which allows him to distort, alter, and otherwise toy with people's neural and chemical functioning. His ability also lets him alter electromagnetic fields to affect technology around him.

While we've only got to see a flash of Crews in the trailer, we can totally see the hilarious Brooklyn Nine-Nine star fitting into the cast of Deadpool 2 with ease.

He's another member of the mutant X-Force team that'll join Wade in round 2 of Deadpool.

Firefist

Firefist? Ooh that’s a great name. Where does it burn? Just the fist or all the way up to the elbow?
Deadpool

At the outset, Firefist is the central plot device in Deadpool 2, bringing Cable and Deadpool together. Firefist’s ability is that he generates fire. In all likelihood, another character you’re going to read about on this list is going to be the counter to Firefist, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves now.

Shatterstar

Domino, Shatterstar, Bedlam, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and of course, Peter. Here’s the lowdown on Deadpool 2.

Another member of X-Force, Shatterstar is from an alternate future dimension, at least in the comics. He's the guy dressed like a Samurai in white, wielding two swords, and jumping around killing things in the trailer.

He was also genetically engineered (IS THERE ANYONE WHO ISN'T GENETICALLY ENGINEERED IN THE MARVEL UNIVERSE?!) to serve as a gladiator on his alternate future dimension, called Mojoworld.

Shatterstar's bones are hollow, making him extremely light, but extremely agile. Like Deadpool, Shatterstar has heightened healing abilities, which means he can pretty much take a hit and shake it off.

He's also a part of the X-Force.

Peter

Deadpool: Any power you wanna tell us about?

Peter: I have both Type 1 and 2 Diabetes.

Peter, likely Peter Wisdom, in the trailer at least, appears to have no superpowers (except for the diabetes). But that said, in the comics, he's a secret agent who can absorb thermal energy, and fire "hot knives" as projectiles from his hands.

With everything else going on in this movie, Peter's role is probably going to have a much bigger impact on the story than we expect right now. Will he be the one to counter Firefist’s fists of fire? Maybe.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead

Negasonic Teenage Warhead, who was literally picked by the writers of the original Deadpool because of her UNBELIEVABLY COOL name, returns for the second coming of Wade Wilson.

While she was a prominent part of the first Deadpool movie, Negasonic's powers in the movie are slightly altered from her comic book powers. In the movies, she can generate and redirect explosive force and energy in the form of atomic blasts.

She's got the ability to generate explosive energy, at will. Her powers are a blast. Literally.

Colossus

Colossus returns from the first outing of Deadpool. The Russian member of the X-Men can turn his whole body into metal, becoming the strongest member of the team in an instant.

Standing at 6 feet 7 inches, Colossus was excellent in the first Deadpool, and we're sure Peter, AKA Piotr, will be just as colossal in the sequel.

Surge

Surge is the girl with purple hair who’s visible for all of 5 seconds in the trailer. You know. The one swinging A WHIP THAT'S SHOOTING ELECTRICITY? Yeah, that's the one.

Surge is a part of the New X-Men, and not the X-Force. Her abilities are that she absorbs electricity at all times, and can more or less release and redirect its flow through her body, for some pretty SHOCKING results (lol, forgive me. Puns aren't a crime yet.)

Zeitgeist

Fresh off the wagon from his role as Pennywise the Dancing Clown in Stephen King’s It, Bill Skaarsgard plays Zeitgeist.

With just glimpses of him in the trailer, and no actual demonstration of his powers, only the comics let us know that his power is the ability to spit acidic vomit, and enhanced durability.
