“But think about how soldiers toil along the border for hours at a stretch!” – is the overly recycled, vapid response of optimistic supporters of demonetisation to the people that groan about standing in long queues outside ATMs and banks.
But imagine the jolt one received when this hackneyed phrase was actually used against an army veteran who had toiled along the border for 20 years and was sweating now to get his pension at a queue.
In a post on Facebook, retired Army officer Darshan Dhillon recounted the incident, where his counter punch against the clichéd justification left a man speechless.
The army veteran clarified that even though he supported the Modi government’s move, he was against the unplanned implementation.
It goes without saying that it will take more than this to justify how the government can afford to implement an unplanned currency ban which is threatening people’s livelihood and has created a cash crunch in the country’s economy.
