I usually spend Diwali with my friends and relatives. But this year, things are different for me. Thanks to The Quint's #SpreadTheLight campaign, I visited a community school in a slum in Agarpura village in Noida.
The school is run by an NGO named Sai Kripa. Apart from children from the area where the institution is situated, kids from the orphanage run by the same NGO also study here.
The school, which currently has around 200 children studying from nursery to 10th standard, is volunteer-driven, and charges no fee. There is no age bar on the admission, as the motto of the school is to provide basic education to all the children who want to learn.
Despite this being such a great initiative, I was sad to see conditions in which the school was functioning.
The children were studying in dark classrooms with no light, no fan. The property of the school is rented.
This is far from the conditions we would call apt. Far from it.
So, while I did spend the day playing and dancing with the kids, deriving happiness from the priceless smile on their faces, I was left wondering what if we could spend our Diwalis making the lives of people around us a little better.
What if we could make their smile last a little longer?
How, you ask?
This takes very little effort. You can #SpreadTheLight in the lives of the school children at Sai Kripa and make the world around us a slightly better place.
To help these children, you can get in touch with Sai Kripa at 01202531521.
Their address is Saikripa, Balkutir, Z-133-134, Sector 12, Noida.
