Dear India,

The first month of the year has been an odd mix of hope and despair. You’ve had a comedian being arrested for doing his job. You've had an innocent man, Rohith Vemula, taking his life for something he was born with. You also had Bhupendra Chaubey donning the role of a ‘sexist, misogynistic pig’ for his “interview” (read – interrogation) of Sunny Leone, while social media rose to her defense.

The fact is that at least some part of our nation realises:

1. Not every woman is a victim.

2. Everyone has a past, the key is to own it.

3. There’s no shame in porn and sex.

4. Even if there is ‘shame’, the onus should lie both with the porn star and the viewer.

All I’m trying to say is when we take a step forward, an incident like this just pulls us back. It's unfortunate, but I’m thankful for the steps taken forward.

Yours,

Arnaz
