Having won the Wimbledon women’s doubles crown with Martina Hingis over the weekend, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza returned home on Tuesday to a hero’s welcome.
Sania became the first Indian to clinch the Wimbledon women’s doubles title when she, along with Martina Hingis beat Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7 7-6 (4) 7-5 in the final on Saturday.
The hard court season is just round the corner. We like playing on that surface. Last year, I made it to the semifinals there with a different partner and Martina made the final with (Flavia) Pennetta at the US Open, so we are looking forward to going there as number one seeds, hopefully. I think one of the other goals is to qualify for Singapore championship (WTA Finals).
– Sania Mirza, Doubles World Number One
Sania, who arrived at her home town of Hyderabad from London, said she would like to set only “very short term” goals in life and not look too far ahead.
