M L Sharma, the defence lawyer in the 2012 Nirbhaya gangrape case, and his infamous misogynistic views are pretty well known now. In his latest bizarre statement, he said on Tuesday that the entire gangrape was planned and orchestrated by a politician, in connivance with the victim’s male companion, “to score political mileage”. Here’s The Quint’s interview with Sharma last year that not only contains more of his ludicrous remarks but also serves as a good reminder that as long as citizens of our country share such misogynistic sentiments, there will not be an end to rape.

Here’s another reason why lawyer ML Sharma is a piece of work.

The outspoken lawyer, who defended the accused in the Nirbhaya gangrape case of December 2012, has referred to women in the banned BBC documentary India’s Daughter as “food items that can’t be left on the streets”.

He added that in “Indian culture”, women are “never allowed out of the house after 6.30 pm”, that women and men being friends has “no place in our society”.

Now watch Sharma defend his misogynistic views.

We at The Quint are outraged by his statements and stand by the Change.org petition asking for Sharma and fellow-lawyer AP Singh to be debarred.
