A wildlife conservationist has revealed an intimate footage taken from the back of an orphaned baby rhino – documenting the animal as it munches on mango leaves and takes a nap.
Gary Schneider, from Johannesburg, attached a GoPro camera to two-year-old rhino Thor – whose mother was killed by poachers when he was just two weeks old. The heart-warming footage shows Thor playing and napping with other rhinos. Gary says the footage was taken with the intention of raising awareness of poaching.
Black rhinos like Thor are now considered a critically endangered species due to record poaching levels. The number of rhinos poached in South Africa alone has increased by 9,000 percent since 2007 – from 13 to a record 1,215 in 2014.
