Can you name at least five Bollywood female buddy films? Hardly right? That’s because we don’t have many. But if I ask you to name five male buddy films, not five but you will give me at least ten of them. Yes, you don’t need to think hard to figure that films that have a lot of girl bonding don’t get made in Bollywood. Why is this happening? Because it all boils down to the economics. Producers don’t think people will go to the theatre to watch a film about a bunch of girls. Looks like girls only like watching saans bahu serials and bahu turning into nagins and makhis.

But there was also a time when we thought female-centric films won’t do well, untill No One Killed Jessica, Dirty Picture, Kahaani, Queen, Piku and Raazi proved everyone wrong. Filmmakers and producers, if you are reading this and if you are worried about the money, then let me remind you Bridesmaids which is out and out a female buddy film was made at 32 million dollars, grossed 26 million dollars in the opening weekend itself. It was not only a huge hit but it also got nominated for the Oscars and Golden Globes.

But thanks to Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor for giving us Veere Di Wedding. We don’t know if it will be a hit or a flop but at least there is change and hopefully after this we will see more female bonding films and get over catfights.

Veere Di Wedding starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Shikha Talsania, Sumeet Vyas will hit theatres on 1st June. The film is directed by Shashank Ghosh and produced by Rhea Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor. The team has also brought Farah Khan Kunder on board to choreograph the promotional song with the four leading ladies - Tareefan featuring Badshah.
