Amid the raging controversy over the practice of triple talaq, a man from Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar divorced his wife over the telephone after she gave birth to a girl child.

Shahnawaz had been married to the 19-year-old woman for over a year when he disappeared from his home town. Later, he moved to Saudi Arabia, where he reportedly works as a driver. Unhappy about not having a male child, Shahnawaz allegedly called his wife and uttered ‘talaq’ three times in a row.

The woman now wants the practice of triple talaq to be done away with. The incident comes soon after the Law Commission’s move to gather public opinion on a Uniform Civil Code came under fire from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board.
