Rohit Shetty’s end-of-the-year blockbuster Simmba hit theatres on 28 December. The Quint headed to Mumbai’s Gaiety Galaxy to check out what fans thought of the Ranveer Singh and Sara Ali Khan-starred.
Eager to find out what the audience reactions were like, Ranveer Singh surprised his fans by turning up at the theatre with Shetty and interacting with them.
Early reviews have lauded Ranveer’s performance in an otherwise predicable film. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has called the Simmba a “winner” and rated it with 4 stars. He has deemed Ranveer’s performance as “outstanding”. Other reviewers have not been so kind to Shetty and have pointed out its problematic plot that is a misguided drama of rape and revenge.
The Quint’s Stutee Ghosh says, “At 2 hours and 40 mins, the second half drags more than is desirable and the ‘women’s empowerment’ message sits awkwardly. But just to see Ranveer Singh do this thing unhinged and unabashedly, you can watch Simmba.”
Simmba features Ranveer Singh as Sangram Bhalerao, a corrupt policeman who has a change of heart. It also stars Sara Ali Khan in what has turned out to be a blink-and-you-miss-it role.
The film also sees several cameos with actors and characters from other Rohit Shetty titles. Ajay Devgn reprises his role as Bajirao Singham from the Singham series and Arshad Warsi, Tusshar Kapoor, Kunal Kemmu and Shreyas Talpade from the Golmaal comedy film franchise make an appearance in the song ‘Aankh Marey’. Akshay Kumar too is briefly introduced as an ATS chief named Sooryavanshi at the film’s close.
