Following a flurry of protests and threats surrounding Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, the CBFC has passed the film with a ‘UA’ certificate and suggested the name of the film be changed to Padmavat.
While we celebrate the outcome, it’s still making us wonder what the fuss is all about.
According to several sources, there was no mention of a Rani Padmavati, or Padmini as she is also known, in the timelines of both Sultan Alauddin Khilji and Rana Ratan Singh of Chittor.
Additionally, Malik Muhammad Jayasi, the medieval poet who reportedly penned the poem ‘Padmavat’ chronicling the story between Khilji, Ratan Singh, and Padmini, had ended his poems with the line: “I have made up the story and related it.”
So, did she really exist? That’s up to you to figure out.
