Over 40 Russians and 30 Dutch nationals travelled to Siberian Russia recently to participate in an endurance race.

Here’s the catch: the race was held on the deepest, largest (by volume), and possibly oldest, freshwater lake in the world. In the winter, temperatures at Lake Baikal in Siberian Russia regularly drop below -14 Centigrade (7 Fahrenheit).

The participants competed in an ice skating and cycling contest, with the skiing contest being cancelled due to a lack of people willing to brave the gruelling journey on skis. The race lasted three days and its participants had to overcome a total of 205 kilometres (127 miles).

The winners from the two categories were - unsurprisingly - Russian.
