Chinese engineers and workers engaged in the construction of the M4 Motorway under the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, on 3 April, got into a brawl with Pakistan policemen who were deployed for their security in the Khanewal district of the Punjab province of Pakistan.
Several clips of the incident recorded by locals were shared on different social media platforms.
In the video, the Chinese nationals are seen getting aggressive with Pakistani security officials. They are seen banging vehicles angrily. One man is seen getting on top of the bonnet of a car.
According to a report on Dawn, the brawl broke out when the Chinese nationals were denied the permission to visit a "red light" district without being escorted by security officials.
The report further stated that the Chinese workers cut off the power supply to the police camp at the construction site and also abandoned heavy machinery out in the open.
Later they reportedly wrote a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif alleging that Pakistani police officials prevented them from going about their duties. This claim was rejected by the police.
A report on Dawn from 6 April said that Khanewal district police officer Rizwan Umar Gondal recommended the deportation of the five officials to the Punjab government. He also demanded for them to be declared persona non grata.
He said that the policemen were following procedures regarding safety in denying the Chinese nationals the permission to step out without security arrangements.
