James, the cow who has become a social media sensation, recently celebrated his first birthday on May 21. Known for his wide-ranging set of friends and for dressing up in various costumes, he is nursed by Emily Hopson in the Happy Hens & Highlands farm in North Carolina, US.
Born with a Dummy Calf syndrome, he has had several medical complications and has undergone multiple surgeries. During one such surgery, his heart stopped beating for around two minutes and he was saved through CPR.
As Emily puts it , “I felt like we had witnessed a miracle. I was certain he was gone. Then his little heart started beating again, it was amazing.”
Having been discarded by the rest of his herd due to his medical problems, Emily adopted him and raised him along with her dogs. But she knew he would soon outgrow them. So she adopted four more orphaned cows to ensure that James would feel at home. These cows were in attendance at his first birthday party.
James’ story has touched many and Emily has received messages from several people saying that his story has given them the strength to fight through chemotherapy and depression.
“We never expected his story would touch so many people. It’s amazing how many people have been inspired by him” she said.
