A video has surfaced from UP’s Unnao which shows a group of men sexually assaulting a woman as she asks them to stop, while threatening to make the video “viral”.
The video was shared on social media and has been made viral since it was initially posted on Friday, 6 July, ANI reported.
In the video, the woman can be heard pleading “Bhaiyya aise mat karo (please don’t do this)” while the men can be seen assaulting her and hurling obscenities. The woman has alleged that she was raped by these men, reported ANI.
Praveen Kumar, Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Law & Order told the news agency that three people have been arrested in the case and an investigation is underway. One of the accused was in custody since 3 July after being arrested in a separate case pertaining to theft, ANI quoted a police official as saying.
“The case is two months old and the victim had not filed a report with the police, but now her medical examination is underway,” Kumar added.
On 7 July, a fourth person was arrested in connection with the case, ANI reported.
In April this year, a woman from Unnao accused BJP MlA Kuldeep Singh Sengar of having raped her when she was a minor. She staged a protest in front of the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s house, urging action. After her protest, UP police took her father into police custody where he allegedly died after being subjected to police brutality.
The April Unnao case had come close on the heels of the horrific rape and murder of an 8-year-old girl in Kathua. The cases sparked protests across the country, following which the government passed an ordinance sanctioning the death penalty for those who rape children below the age of 12.
