Triple Talaq Shall Continue, Says Islamic Body Defying SC Order

A day after the Supreme Court held the practice of triple talaq as unconstitutional, Islamic body Jamiat Ulama-i Hind said that it will continue to be practiced and recognised in India.

In a clear defiance of the SC order, Jamiat General Secretary Maulana Mahmood Madani held that the ruling interfered with the fundamental right to religion.

“This verdict is against the Islamic Shariat and it is a matter of great concern for the Muslim community,” the body said.

If you want to punish the person for it, you can do so, but the divorce will be recognised. Not only do we not agree with the judgment, we think this is a direct assault on the fundamental right to practice religion.

The apex court had on Tuesday deemed talaq-e-biddat or instant triple talaq as invalid. The judgment said the practice violated Article 14 of the Constitution, which provides for equality before the law.
