Kanchan Nath, a yoga instructor and former Doordarshan worker, lost her life after a coconut tree fell on her while she was out for a morning walk on 20 July. Passers-by ran to help her and took her to a local hospital where she was admitted in the ICU. Two days later on 22 July, she succumbed to the head injury.

A CCTV camera installed in the vicinity captured the incident which is being widely shared on social media. The residents of the society had petitioned Brihanmumbai Municipality Corporation authorities to cut down the tree on 17 February this year.

BMC inspected the tree and told the applicants that it was healthy enough to stand for ten more years. Her husband, Rajat Nath, accused BMC of criminal negligence and said that he will take legal action against the civic body.
