‘Thalapathy’ MK Stalin succeeds ‘Kalaignar’ Karunanidhi. Stalin was elected the president of the DMK on Tuesday, 28 August, at the party's general council meeting in Chennai. Prior to his election, he was the working president of the party.
Stalin had filed nomination for the post of party president on 26 August.
Senior leader and principal secretary of the DMK, Durai Murugan, was elected the treasurer of the party.
DMK cadres and workers rejoiced at the party headquarters in Chennai, as Stalin was coronated as only the second party president in its 49-year history, after his father Karunanidhi.
A two-minute silence was observed at the DMK General Council meeting at party headquarters to pay tribute to the late former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi, late former prime minister Atal Bihar Vajpayee, late former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee, late former Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit Singh Barnala and late former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
Congress President Rahul Gandhi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to congratulate the newly elected DMK President.
A day before Stalin's elevation as the DMK president, his estranged brother and expelled leader MK Alagiri hardened his stance saying he will continue with the proposed 5 September march and warned the party of consequences if he was not re-admitted.
