Sherin Mathews, who went missing on 7 October, was found dead in a culvert, about 1 km from her home, in Dallas on 22 October. The 3-year-old was born in India and was adopted by an Indian-American couple, Wesley and Sini Mathews.

Sherin, who was adopted from an orphanage in Bihar, was previously named Saraswati.

The Quint reached out to Nalanda Mother Teresa Anathalaya, the orphanage that housed Sherin before adoption. The child’s caretaker shared precious memories of Sherin.

She was a well behaved and happy child. We expected her to excel in life. We can’t understand how this happened.

The members of the adoption agency were baffled and disheartened at Sherin’s death. The secretary of the Nalanda Mother Teresa Anathalaya, Babita Kumar, said, “ Saraswati (Sherin Mathews) was a healthy, lively, and stubborn kid. During Saraswati's adoption, we never thought she will go missing or die in the US. We regret giving her to them (Wesley and Sini Mathews).”

Wesley Mathews was arrested again after he changed the story of how Sherin died. Initially, he claimed that the 3-year-old went missing after he sent her outside their home at 3 am as punishment for not drinking her milk . Later, Wesley told the police that Sherin died because she choked on milk in the garage of their home.
