Amid growing calls for his presence in Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday attended proceedings in the Rajya Sabha for an hour.

While he was there, PM Modi came under attack from members of the opposition, which included his predecessor Dr Manmohan Singh as well. The former Prime Minister termed demonetisation a "planned loot", while criticising the centre’s hasty implementation of the same.

Similarly, senior Trinamool Congress lawmaker Derek O’Brien ripped into the Centre, accusing it of tormenting vast sections of the Indian population. Launching into his characteristic rhetoric, O’Brien openly challenged the NDA government against what he called was a concerted effort to target the Mamata Banerjee-led government.

Later, in response to Dr Singh’s scathing remarks, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley declared that he was surprised to see Dr Singh speak up in whose terms a litany of scams had come to the fore.
