Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday, 7 August, lashed out at the Modi government over its approach towards women issues, underlining Prime Minister's silence on various rape cases in the country.

Addressing the Congress Mahila Sammelan at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi, Rahul took a swipe at BJP's "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" slogan, saying that “betis needed to be saved from the saffron party MLAs”.

The ideology of the BJP and RSS is that only the men will run this country, and if it is anywhere that the women belong, it is at the back... What happened against women in these four years is something which didn’t happen even in the last 70 years.

The Congress president once again brought up the Women's Reservation Bill during his address, reminding the Modi government of how the Congress had assured them of their support to the proposal.

“If they table the Women’s Reservation Bill, we will give them full support. If they don’t, we will pass the bill as soon as the Congress party comes to the power.”

Hitting back at Rahul for his speech, Union Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said:

BJP has the highest number of women MPs and MLAs. We have Sushma Swaraj, Nirmala Sitharaman as senior ministers. It is the Modi government which has given women permission to fly fighter aircraft.
