Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers for the election to the post of Congress president on Monday, 4 December. He was accompanied by a host of senior party leaders, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh. Gandhi is likely to emerge the lone candidate in the fray, and decks have been cleared for him to succeed his mother, Sonia Gandhi who has headed the Congress party for 19 consecutive years.

Rahul Gandhi filed his nomination papers in the presence of Sheila Dikshit, Siddaramaiah, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and other prominent leaders of the Congress party. Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh welcomed Rahul’s nomination, calling the Gandhi scion a darling among the party cadres.

Rahulji has been a darling of the Congress men and women. This will be a step forward in his quest for serving the people. Smt Sonia Gandhi has served the country through the Congress party for the past 19 years. Rahul Gandhi will carry on the great traditions of the Congress party.

Speaking to ANI, disgruntled Congress leader Shehzad Poonawalla said there was a possibility of a ‘dummy’ candidate taking part in the party’s internal elections for the post of president. “I have a strong objection to everyone calling it a nomination and an election process. This is a selection process, a fixed match and the coronation of a king. Rahul Gandhi’s dynastic courtiers rather than carrying his nomination papers should carry a crown, he said.”

BJP leaders took jibes at the Congress party for elevating Rahul Gandhi from the post of Vice President. Union Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi claimed that Gandhi’s elevation is a “promotion without performance”.

This is a clear-cut case of promotion without performance. This is possible only in a feudal political setup. I would like to congratulate Rahul Gandhi on this elevation without performing. The Congress is on a ventilator and Rahul Gandhi’s elevation will not make a difference to Congress’ situation.
