Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, while interacting with students at Princeton University on Wednesday during his two-week tour of the US, lashed out at the deficit of jobs in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Gandhi mostly spoke about jobs and nation-building. He admitted that the Modi-led BJP government came to power in India as the people were angry with the Congress over the issue of unemployment.

Leaders like Narendra Modi and Donald Trump have been elected because people bought their promises to create more jobs. Gandhi stressed that even the Prime Minister was not doing enough to solve this key problem India is facing.

“The same people who got angry with us because we couldn't deliver on those 30,000 jobs (a day) are going to get angry with Mr Modi,” Gandhi said.

I think the central reason why Mr Modi rose to power and, to an extent, why Mr Trump came, is because the question of jobs in India and in the US was uncertain.

He also raised the issue of polarisation in India and said that the politics of polarisation was the central challenge in India and some sections of society, including minority communities and tribal people, do not feel a part of the ruling BJP's vision.

On Wednesday, Rahul Gandhi said that notwithstanding the path chosen by them, the performance of India and China would determine how the world would be fundamentally reshaped.

They are two huge countries transforming from agriculture to urban modern countries. How these two countries do is going to fundamentally reshape the world. There is cooperation and there is competition. We have to figure out how to get our jobs. We have to basically compete with China.

On India's ties with the US, Gandhi said there was a lot of space for cooperation between the two nations in the creation of jobs and in the education sector.

“I think there’s a lot of synergy between the two countries,” said the Congress vice president
