Northern India has turned into winter wonderland. Snowfall has engulfed Jammu and Kashmir, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh.

Rainfall and snow were recorded in high-altitude tribal areas and mountain passes of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, bringing down the temperature across north India.

The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed on Wednesday, 13 December, due to snowfall. An India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said the present weather conditions in Jammu and Kashmir are likely to continue till Thursday, 14 December, due to western disturbance over the state.

In the state's summer capital, flights to and from Srinagar were delayed due to poor visibility.

In Uttarakhand, the four Himalayan shrines of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri were laced with snow. The maximum temperature plummeted by 4-6 degree Celsius due to light to moderate rainfall. Widespread rains were reported in most places in the last 24 hours, while areas located above 3,000 feet recieved around two feet of snowfall, Vikram Singh, IMD Director, said.

On the other hand, Kalpa in Himachal Pradesh recorded a low of 0 degree Celsius, followed by Manali (2.6 degrees), Keylong (2.7 degrees) and Bhuntar (4.2 degrees). Solan, Shimla and Dharamsala recorded minimum temperatures of 6.1 degrees, 6.5 degrees, and 7.2 degrees respectively.

The chilly weather was not enough to damp the spirit of tourists, who came out in large numbers to enjoy and play in the snow.

Meanwhile, farmers expect better harvest due to the snow.
