It has been almost 2 weeks since the results for Maharashtra Assembly elections were declared and there is still no clarity about who will form the government in the state. Now, rumours are doing the rounds that Shiv Sena-NCP might form the government with outside support to their coalition from Congress.

The Quint spoke to NCP’s Maharashtra chief Jayant Patil on this. He said if Shiv Sena and the BJP fail to reach an agreement over formation of government, then the NCP will have to start looking at alternate options.

“We were of the view that Shiv Sena and BJP would form the government and our party accepts the mandate to play the role of Opposition. But the government is yet to be formed. In such a scenario, one must start looking at the alternatives. We didn’t want to do this but if such an offer is made, then we will definitely consider it.”

Patil took a jibe at the BJP that a party which boasts to have 56-inch chest is unable to handle 56 MLAs of Shiv Sena. He also added that there is no need to implement President’s rule in the state as the voters will not accept it.

Responding to Sanjay Raut’s claim on chief minister’s post for Shiv Sena and calling Devendra Fadnavis an outgoing chief minister, Patil said that he does not agree with Raut. He added that it is not right to talk about government formation if you do not have the required numbers.
