Former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Sharif were arrested at Lahore airport on 13 July in relation to a disproportionate assets case. The two will be taken to Adiala Jail, according to the Dawn newspaper.
Their return and arrest happened just days before the 25 July general elections in Pakistan.
The father-daughter duo were earlier in London to see Nawaz’s ailing wife Kulsoom Nawaz. Nawaz and his daughter were convicted of disproportionate assets by an accountability court in Pakistan on 6 July 2018.
Sharif was sentenced to 10 years in prison while Maryam was sentenced to 7 years. Sharif’s son-in-law Muhammad Safdar was sentenced to 1 year in prison for not cooperating with the investigation.
Nawaz Sharif was disqualified for life from holding political office or contesting elections.
Nawaz Sharif said that recent events have put a question mark on the credibility of elections. He added that he was coming back because he respected the democratic process.
Meanwhile, supporters of Sharif’s party Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) were detained by the police as they marched to Lahore airport.
