Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth Global Conference on Cyber Space in New Delhi, on Thursday, 23 November. The global conference was organised for the first time in India.

During his speech, Modi emphasised on the importance of digital technology and the impact it has made in today’s world.

We all know how cyber space has transformed the world over the last few decades. The senior generation would recall the bulk main-frame computer systems of the ‘70s and ‘80s. A lot has changed since then. E-mail and personal computers brought a new revolution in the ‘90s. This was followed by the advent of social media and mobile phone that have become an important vehicle of communication.

The Prime Minister spoke profoundly about the achievements of India’s IT industry on a global platform. “Indian IT talent has been recognised worldwide. Indian IT companies have made a name for themselves globally. Digital technology has emerged a great enabler. It has paved the way for efficient service delivery and governance,” he said.

Modi also encouraged delegates gathered from the global spectrum to responsibly tackle the threats generated by cyberspace.

We need to ensure that vulnerable sections of our society do not fall prey to the evil designs of cyber criminals. Nations must also take responsibility to ensure that the digital space does not become a playground for the dark forces of terrorism and radicalisation.
