Nation Pays Homage to India’s Bapu on His 70th Death Anniversary

PM Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind paid homage to the ‘Father of the Nation’ at Rajghat in New Delhi.

The nation on Tuesday, 30 January, remembered Mahatma Gandhi on his 70th death anniversary, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind paying homage to the ‘Father of the Nation’ by laying wreaths at Rajghat in New Delhi.

Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, army chief General Bipin Rawat, navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba, and Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa were also present.

Modi recalled the sacrifices made by martyrs who laid down their lives for the country.

Earlier, Congress President Rahul Gandhi went to the Gandhi Smriti to pay homage.

The old Birla House is also known as Gandhi Smriti. It is here that Mahatma Gandhi spent his last 144 days.

Sonia Gandhi and former prime minister Manmohan Singh also paid tribute to Bapu.

Prime Minister Modi and Cabinet ministers Arun Jaitley, Smriti Irani and Mahesh Sharma also took to social networking site to pay tributes to the leader.

Rajghat is located on the banks of River Yamuna. Mahatma Gandhi was cremated here on 31 January 1948, a day after he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse at Birla House. This day is also observed as "Martyrs Day" in India.
